GIAN Programme: Media, Law and World Order

Introduction to the GIAN Course:

This course will seek to understand some key dynamics of changing world order, shifting between history and courtroom, to try to understand the new contours of the international world order over the course of the 20th C and to the present time. "Media" constituted a new category for analysis and a new branch of academic inquiry in the post WWII period, and also a key battleground of the Cold War, with the United States determined to "export the first amendment" in response to its new role as a world superpower. Media norms became political weapons, but in much of the world, their relationship to law was often informal rather than constitutional. Since historically, political power depended on control over information, the Cold War era norm of the "free flow of information" created a new set of dynamics which we have yet to fully understand, but which have transformed the world in ways never foreseen by Cold Warriors. We will discuss shifts in the post WWII world order, as perceived through the category of media, and via issues of international law and justice.
